Disturbingly haunting filled with goosebumps of dread, fear and knowledge there will always be a nightmare lurking…
Admittedly, I purchased her other novel: ‘The Knight and the Moth’ before this duology, but was instructed to stay far away until the sequel was released because the cliffhanger was too crazy. So, in my anticipation, I picked up this duology to satiate my need and I’m so glad I did!
This first book in The Shepherd King duology follows Elspeth and the nightmare inside her head as she hides her magic from everyone she knows in fear of being killed. But after meeting a mysterious highwayman and embarking on an impossible quest together only she might be able to solve, the nightmare beings to eat her alive and take over her mind…
I absolutely ADORED this book, taking me a while to get into it but souring through the rest all in one day. The magic system is so incredibly unique I’ve never seen anything like this, both in the providence cards and the isolation of Blunder which is an eerie town clearly not made for those of us with claustrophobia – so intricate and beautiful for a debut! The gothicness, the fantasy and the romance is all a perfect balanced blend. I was equally haunted from beyond whilst also unravelling this mystery of – what on earth is actually going on?
